Course Description:
This course addresses the Pennsylvania standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are guided through collections of fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry as they analyze plot, setting, characters, point of view, theme, irony, symbolism, allegory, drama and poetry. The course also continues vocabulary development through weekly vocabulary lessons and the study of prefixes, suffixes, word origins, use of context clues, synonyms and figurative language.
Speech and Composition 9
Course Description/Class Summary:
This course addresses the Pennsylvania standards in reading, writing, and speaking and listening while introducing students to the research writing process and strengthening public speaking skills. Students will learn the steps in writing a successful research paper as they conduct online research. Students will work through the process beginning with choosing a topic and progressing through note taking, developing a thesis, creating an outline, completing a works cited page, and creating the final copy. At mid-year the focus will change to public speaking. Students will learn the step-by-step process to delivering various types of speeches including impromptu, informative, and persuasive.

Course Description:
This course continues to address the Pennsylvania State Standards in reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Students are guided through collections of fiction, nonfiction, and drama as they analyze plot, setting, character, point of view, theme, irony, ambiguity, symbolism, allegory, elements of style, and characteristics of drama. The course also continues vocabulary development through vocabulary lessons and the study of affixes, analogies, etymologies, context clues, root words, synonyms and antonyms. Students will focus on strengthening writing skills as they compose multi-paragraph compositions and improving grammatical skills.
Multimedia Journalism
Course Description/Class Summary:
This course is designed to give participants exposure to the differing realms of journalism in the 21st century. Participants will develop journalistic writing and interview skills, learn layout, design and production techniques, use various types of software and equipment, and practice the ethical and legal responsibility of journalists. The aptitudes will then be applied in creating news resources including The Viklet, and WVIK Viking News. All participants will be expected to contribute in all phases of the design process of each product including: writing, editing, designing, producing, and performing. This course is writing intensive and requires a strong degree of self motivation, responsibility, and collaboration

Algebra I
Course Description:
In Algebra I, students will build on the knowledge and skills for mathematics in Grades 6-8, which provide a foundation in linear relationships, number and operations, and proportionality. Students will learn the vocabulary and symbolic representations necessary to communicate mathematical ideas clearly. Students will connect functions and their associated solutions in both mathematical and real-world situations and will further develop their ability to work with and solve word problems. Students will study linear and exponential functions and represent them in various ways. Students will generate and solve systems of linear equations and inequalities with two variables. In addition, students will simplify expressions by using the laws of exponents, will perform operations with and factor polynomials, and will simplify radical expressions. Appropriate technology will be used to enhance mathematical understanding and problem solving skills. Students will be provided with the necessary foundation of skills to be fully prepared to complete an Algebra II course.
Algebra II
Course Description:
This math class is for students in 11th grade, especially SCTC students. The focus of the class is on the application of geometry concepts. Students will apply previously learned algebraic skills to proficiently solve problems involving area and volume. Geometric transformations and the Pythagorean Theorem will be covered. Students will be introduced to concepts and properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry. Logical reasoning and geometric proofs will also be explored.
College Algebra
Course Description:
College Algebra is a comprehensive exploration of fundamental algebraic principles essential for both academic success and real-world problem-solving. Through an in-depth examination of algebraic manipulation, functions, equations, and inequalities, students gain mastery over the properties of real numbers, exponential and logarithmic functions, polynomials, and rational expressions. Pre-Calculus
Course Description:
This math class is for students in 11th grade. The focus of the class is on concepts that will provide a solid foundation for students who choose to take Calculus or for students who will attend college. Algebraic skills and topics that have been previously covered in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 will be reviewed. A significant portion of the class will be spent on solving problems involving Trigonometry. Conics, sequences and series, probability, and statistics are other topics that will be covered in greater depth than in previous math classes.
Calculus
Course Description:
This math class is for students in 12th grade. This is a college-level class that can be taken for college credit through Mount Aloysius College. Most of the class will be spent on solving problems involving limits, derivatives, and integrals. Parametric equations, polar coordinates, and vectors are some new topics that will be explored. Exponential functions, logarithmic functions, conics, sequences, and series are other topics that will be covered in greater depth than in previous math classes.

It also includes advanced topics such as acid-base titration, thermochemistry, kinetics, equilibrium, organic and nuclear chemistry. The main goal is to prepare students for a world very much affected by chemistry. This course is challenging and is recommended only for students who plan to attend college. Course Description:
In Civics 9, students will investigate the people who live in America as well as Citizenship, The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, The Constitution, The Legislative Branch, The Executive Branch, The Judicial Branch, State Government, Local Government, Political Parties, Elections, The Criminal Justice System, Civil and Criminal Law and Elections. Students will participate in various activities, projects, and discussions pertaining to these Civics topics to include creating a country, presenting amendments, processing a bill, engaging in a mock trial and completing a citizenship test.
World Cultures
Course Description/Class Summary:
The 10th grade World Cultures course covers the Renaissance to Modern Times. This is a survey history course that looks at how modern cultures have contributed, shown continuity, stayed the same, cooperated, and have had conflict with each other. The class will discuss how modern cultures have developed into the civilizations found in the world today.

The 11th grade American History course covers the Reconstruction Period to Modern Times. This is a survey history course that looks at how American culture have contributed, shown continuity, stayed the same, cooperated, and have had conflict. The class will discuss how the modern United States has developed into its present day existence.

Course Description/Class Summary:
In Problems of Democracy 12, students will evaluate: the foundations of government, the origins of US Government, benefits and limits of modern governments, the impact of the US Constitution today, federalism, the executive branch, the legislative branch, the judicial branch, ways to participate in government, how to think like an economist, markets, business and labor. While doing so, students will participate in various activities, projects, and discussions pertaining to these POD topics to include: researching political parties, having the opportunity to register to vote, the obligation to register for Selective Service, issues and candidates, critiquing those that represent them, researching current US Supreme Court cases, a stock market competition, creating small business plans, and other simulations.
Health / Phys Ed.
- 9th Grade P.E Course Description:
This course provides students with the opportunity to learn a variety of sports and sport related movements as well as health and fitness concepts. Emphasis is placed on active participation and positive social interaction during fitness and sport activities. This class meets three times each week for the entire school year building on the skills and concepts learned in middle school physical education.

The purpose of health education is to build comprehensive health knowledge and skills in developmentally appropriate ways in an effort to prepare and empower students to value and engage in life-long healthy lifestyles which will allow them to reach their fullest potential and assure that they become productive, responsible citizens. Our goal is to reduce risk behaviors and increase healthy habits which will promote strong bonds between students and their families, schools, and community. This class meets twice each week for the entire school year.
