District Demographics:
The Shanksville-Stonycreek School District is nestled along the slopes of the Allegheny Mountains in the central part of Somerset County about eight miles northeast of Somerset, Pennsylvania and 30 miles northwest of Cumberland, Maryland. It is comprised of the township of Stonycreek and the boroughs of Indian Lake and Shanksville. The school district has a population of approximately 2,800 residents.
Much of the land is productively engaged in farming. Lumbering and strip mining are also important components of the local economy. The area has vast opportunities for the expansion of tourism and recreation in a multi-seasonal climate. The Flight 93 National Memorial is also part of the District. The District's residents are employed in a variety of positions locally as well as in Somerset, Johnstown, and the Cumberland, Maryland area.
Because of the size of its student population, which is 280 students PreK-12, the district consistently ranks as one of the smallest, single-building districts in the state. Shanksville consistently graduates 100% of its seniors, and on average, 58% move on to higher education, 16% to military, and the remainder to the workforce. The District also consistently scores above average on the PSSA test. Reading Recovery, Guided Reading, Scholastic Reading Counts, and Tech Prep are just some of the special programs offered at Shanksville.
