Engage in an Illegal, Immoral, or Unscrupulous Actions
8
Yes, the Internet is a Very Powerful, Convenient, and Useful Tool. However……….
9
……With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
10
The Internet Obviously Makes Life Easier.  However, it Poses Many Threats As Well
  • Immoral Content
  • Predators
  • Identity Theft
  • Spam
  • Viruses
  • Validity of Information

11
Protecting Computer Users from Immoral Content
  • Managing Content – Content Filter
12
Content Filter
  • A content filter is software or a hardware/software combination that blocks unwanted Internet content. While most content filters primarily filter web (http) requests, many can be configured to filter other requests, such as instant messaging or chat rooms.
13
There are two main methods of filtering content: by URL and/or by Keyword
  • URL Filtering blocks a web site based on its address. Filtering by URL can be difficult because of the fluid nature of the internet. Lists of offensive web sites can be obtained through various means, and must be updated often.

  • Ex:  SonicWALL used by SSSD

16
Content Filters Available:
  • SonicWALL
  • Net Nanny
  • www.surfcontrol.com
  • www.4safe.com – $3.99/month

17
Content Filtering Options Provided by Roy Fritz Enterprises, Inc.
  • Install residential content filter such as Net Nanny
  • For multi-computer homes or small business a mini-firewall such as SonicWALL
  • Also can provide intrusion prevention software

Predators:
  • For children, using the Internet can be like walking down a dark alley alone
20
Although children can adapt to technology better than most adults and may have more experience using the Internet, they don’t, however, have more life experience.  They often do not understand the motive and intentions of others and can fall into harm’s way.
21
Warning signs that your child may be at risk online
  • Large amount of time online at night
  • Pornography on computer
  • Phone calls from unrecognizable people
  • Mail, gifts, and packages
  • Turns off monitor when you enter
  • Becomes withdrawn from family
  • Uses a strangers Internet account
22
Protecting Children Online
Parents Should:
  • STAY INVOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Be aware of and monitor online use
  • Encourage children to share any online experience that scares or upsets them
  • Encourage not to give out info
  • Investigate anyone met online

  • Do not keep computer in child’s room
  • Set up guidelines
  • Know what services your child uses
  • Investigate blocking and screening services
  • Spend time online & set an example
  • AND……………………

What is Identity Theft?
  • "Identity theft" refers to crimes in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person's personal data (i.e., name, date of birth, social security number, driver's license number, and your financial identity— credit card, bank account and phone-card numbers) in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain (to obtain money or goods/services)
27
How Identity Thieves GET
Your Personal Information:
  • Business Record Theft
  • Shoulder Surfing
  • Dumpster Diving
  • Under the Color of Authority
  • Skimming
  • Through Unencrypted Transactions
28
How Identity Thieves USE
Your Personal Information:
  • Spending sprees using your account number
  • Obtain new credit cards using your info
  • Establish phone service in your name
  • Open Bank accounts & write bad checks in your name
  • Create counterfeit checks and debit cards

29
How to Prevent Identity Theft from Happening
  • Do not give out your info unless you initiate contact
  • Confirm organization is legitimate
  • Ask for your info not to be shared
  • Only share information through encrypted connections
30
SPAM
  • Spam – (n) To indiscriminately send unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or inappropriate messages, especially commercial advertising in mass quantities. Noun: electronic "junk mail".
31
Spam refers to electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited e-mail. In addition to being a nuisance, spam also eats up a lot of network bandwidth. Because the Internet is a public network, little can be done to prevent spam, just as it is impossible to prevent junk mail. However, the use of software filters in e-mail programs can be used to remove most spam sent through e-mail.
32
About Spam:
  • Electronic junk mail
  • Mass commercial advertising for dubious products
  • Can be found on Listservs, mailing lists, and discussion boards
  • Single message sent to 20 or more
  • Spammers often steal or purchase email information
  • Costs fall on the subscriber not the spammer
33
Why is Spam Bad?
  • Receiver pays more than the sender
  • The “Oceans of Spam” problem
  • Theft of resources – trail accounts and move
  • It is all garbage – no one gets rich quick!!
  • It may be illegal (pornography, countries)
34
What Can Be Done About Spam?
  • Spam Filter – works off of keywords
  • Be prudent about your address and services you sign up for
  • Legislation
  • Remove Lists/Unsubscribe (usually doesn’t work)
35
Virus
  • Computer Virus - A dangerous computer program with the characteristic feature of being able to generate copies of itself, and thereby spreading. Additionally most computer viruses have a destructive payload that is activated under certain conditions.
36
About Computer Viruses:
  • My Doom infected 250,000 computers in a single day in 2004
  • In 1999, the Melissa virus shut down Microsoft and several other large email providers
  • However, viruses in general are on the wane
37
An Ounce of Prevention Equals A Pound of Secure!!
38
How To Safeguard from Viruses:
  • Run a UNIX operating system (not an option)
  • Purchase virus protection software (many types: Symantec, McAfee, Panda Software, etc)
  • Avoid programs from unknown sources (Internet, blank disk or CDs)
  • Never double-click on an attachment that contains an executable that arrives as an e-mail attachment (.XLS, .DOC, .GIF/JPEG)
  • Enable Macro Virus Protection in all Microsoft products
39

40
Validity of Web-Based Information
41
“If it is on the Internet, it is true………….isn’t it?”
42
“It says so on the Internet!”
43
“I saw it on the Internet!”
44
Is All Information on the Internet True?
  • NO!!!!!!!!!
  • Experts estimate 45% of information on the Internet to be valid and factual
  • Just because Skippy has a web page about nuclear fusion doesn’t mean you should try to split an atom.
45
How to Sort Through Information on the Internet
  • Scrutinize the web source (is it legitimate?  is it professional?)
  • Verify information from several sources
  • Use sources other than web-based
  • Use educational web sources
